TAANUAA Tiang Picture Book

Taanuaa or the Tiang Picture Book is a collection of 40 photos taken on Djaul Island in the northwest of New Ireland, Papua New Guinea. The book is bilingual. Each taanuaa, or photo, has a description in Tiang and in English and gives a snapshot of the culture and life of the Tiang community as of the present day and shows the beauty of their home island.
The book aims to enlarge the corpus of literature written in Tiang to inspire more people to read and write in this language. It can be used to enhance literacy in both Tiang and English, and to integrate Tiang culture and traditional knowledge into schools.
Moreover, the English translations of the cultural and environmental notes can make the book attractive for the use in schools across New Ireland to inspire teachers and students to create similar books in their traditional languages. They can also help us share Tiang culture with visitors from other provinces and countries.
