PINI Tiang Story Book

Pini or the Tiang Story Book is a collection of 31 stories, riddles, and songs collected on Djaul Island in northwestern New Ireland, Papua New Guinea. The pini, or stories, were narrated and sung by members of the Tiang community, covering diverse topics: traditional stories about encounters with magical creatures and talking animals, stories of recent events, instructions on how to do things, recollections of historic events, and biographies. The book is bilingual. Each text is given in the Tiang original and is provided with an English translation.
This book is part of a Tiang documentation project started in 2018 and has two aims. First, the book seeks to contribute to the collection of traditional and modern Tiang stories and songs to preserve them for future generations. The second aim is to enlarge the corpus of literature written in Tiang to inspire more people to read and write in this language. The book can be used to enhance literacy in both Tiang and English, and to integrate Tiang culture and traditional knowledge into schools.
